A Versatile Two-Level Backyard in Bohemia, NY
The owners of this Bohemia, NY home wanted a backyard that could handle anything, from big family celebrations to a quiet night by the fire. Our team designed an airy two-level outdoor retreat with multiple dining areas, built-in seating, a custom fire pit and a pool, all tied together with coordinated Cambridge materials. The project was even featured in the 2019 Cambridge catalog.
Cambridge Ledgestone XL with a Mocha Border
The patio and pool deck are laid in Cambridge Ledgestone XL in Sahara Chestnut Lite, with a Mocha inlay border that outlines each space and runs around the pool. The border gives the large patio structure and helps define each area without adding walls or fences. Autumn Brown natural stone treads match the pool coping for a consistent look from the house to the water.
Twin Stairways and Retaining Walls with Built-In Seating
Twin stairways lead down from the house into the backyard, and more steps connect the lower patio to the pool level. Our designers turned the yard’s natural grade into an advantage with retaining walls built from Cambridge MaytRx wall stone in Sandstone. The walls double as seating benches and hold raised planters full of color, so the grade change becomes one of the best parts of the design.
A Custom Gas Fire Pit Surrounded by Seat Walls
A sunken patio with L-shaped seat walls surrounds a custom natural gas linear fire pit. It is the kind of spot where conversations run well into the night, and with the walls doing double duty as benches, there is room for a crowd without extra furniture.
Three Dining Areas and a Pool
The layout includes three separate dining and lounge areas, so the homeowners can host a large party or keep things small. Up top, the pool is surrounded by a wide paver deck and a border of mature trees for privacy. Lush landscaping fills the planters and beds throughout.
The Result
This backyard can host a big graduation party one weekend and a quiet dinner for two the next. The coordinated Cambridge pavers, walls and treads give every level the same warm color palette, so even with multiple dining areas, a fire pit and a pool, the space feels unified instead of busy. Turning a tricky grade into terraces with built-in seating made the yard more usable than a flat lot ever could be.
